AllSpice ‘Spicy Fall Flavors’ Library Event Menu

We had a great time at our September 12 ‘Spicy Fall Flavors’ event at Des Moines’ Central Library, with over twenty people attending.

We put together a simple presentation, showing various ways to warm up classic Fall dishes, demonstrating how sometimes, small changes in your routine or ingredients can make big differences in your cooking.

A couple of folks who could not be there Tuesday night had asked us for the recipes that we sampled at the library. We thought others might like the list, too:

AllSpice at Tomato Festival This Saturday

Heirloom_Baby_TomatoesThis Saturday, September 2, AllSpice Owners Rory and Andy are going to Ted Lare Design Build and Garden Center to participate in their Tomato Fest!

AllSpice will be there from 2pm to 5pm, sampling and selling some AllSpice favorites. Rory has made some of our Tomato Jam to sample,  and we will be sampling “Caprese on a Stick”* as well.

The event spotlights local growers and artists and merchants, and will include:

  • A Tomato Tasting of 20+ heirloom varieties of tomatoes, with customers voting for their favorite one.
  • Jeff Naples, aka “The Beard Behind the Bar,” will mixing up samples of tomato-inspired drinks.
  • There will also be a salsa contest, a coloring contest, and farmers market vendors on site, too.

We would so love to see our readers there!


*Caprese on a Stick = heirloom cherry tomato + fresh basil + mozzarella on a skewer, drizzled with your favorite Balsamic Vinegar for good measure

Series Kicks Off With Paprika “Lunch and Learn”

Paprika-all-kindsJoin us for the kick off to our new event series – Lunch and Learn!

Customers often ask us if we offer cooking classes. While we don’t have the space to host a complete class or an in-depth, hands-on workshop, we did want to find a way to meet customers’ requests for opportunities to learn more about the ingredients we sell — and how to use them effectively and creatively.

Introducing the Lunch and Learn series! Join us every other Wednesday at noon for a specialized shopping experience. Stop by and learn some “spicy” facts, try a tasty sample using that ingredient, and take home a few recipes!

The Lunch and Learn session consists of a 15-minute presentation about our topic of the week. After the informal talk, AllSpice staff will be available to answer any additional questions you may have.

First Friday – Christmas in July!

We need a little Christmas, right this very minute. Yes, it’s only July, but we need a little Christmas now.

It’s time for another AllSpice First Friday party, and this month, we are going to try and beat the heat this summer by spreading a little holiday cheer.

Yes, this month, we’re having a Christmas in July party!


Break out your ugly Christmas… um, tank top, brave the humidity, and come hang out in our blissfully air conditioned store!

This Friday, July 7, we’ll be rocking out to our favorite holiday tunes from 5 – 8 pm, serving up good times, and great holiday food, re-imagined for your summertime pleasure.

We will also be holding a small “holiday” raffle during the First Friday party, so be sure to stop by and drop your name in the bowl!

DMACC Iowa Culinary Institute Fleur de Lys Gala

ICI-17-tablescapeAllSpice owners Rory and Andy, and several of the AllSpice crew, went to the Iowa Culinary Institute‘s (ICI) annual Fleur de Lys gala dinner at DMACC last weekend.

The Iowa Culinary Institute blends the DMACC Culinary Arts program with the community to create unforgettable culinary experiences for its patrons.  The ICI offers opportunities for the public to experience the culinary world at DMACC, and participate in activities involving our Culinary Arts students and staff.  During the academic year, ICI hosts five-course, themed meals prepared by DMACC Culinary Arts students and Culinary Arts faculty. The dinners offer a world-class dining experience. 

The crowning finale of the ICI year is the Fleur de Lys gala that they host each April. Proceeds of this French gourmet buffet dinner (with paired wines) and auction go to support an international chef / student chef exchange, which provides scholarships for the ICI program’s top eight graduates to travel to France in May where they will have culinary internships with our French chefs in the St-Etienne region.
