This recipe won third place in AllSpice’s 2017 Iowa State Fair Sweet Snack Mix Contest.

INGREDIENTS

Spicy snack mix
3 Cups Corn Chex
3 Cups Rice Chex
3 Cups Wheat Chex
1 Cup pretzels
1 Cup bite-size cheese crackers
1/2 Cup Butter Olive Oil
1 Tbs Worcestershire Sauce
2 tsp House Seasoning
1/2 tsp Cayenne Powder
1/2 tsp Onion Powder
1/2 tsp Garlic Salt
1/2 tsp Red Pepper Sauce

Candied Almonds
1/2 Cup water
1 Cup white sugar
1 Tbsp Ground Cinnamon
1 tsp Vanilla Powder
1 tsp Sweet Caramel Seasoning
2 Cups whole almonds
1 Tbsp Vanilla Powder
1 Tbs Sugar

STEPS

In a large microwave safe bowl, mix cereal, nuts, pretzels, and crackers; set aside. In a small bowl, whisk to combine the Butter Olive Oil, Worcestershire sauce, and dry spices. Pour spicy mixture over cereal mixture, tossing until dry ingredients are evenly coated.

Microwave spiced snack mix on high for 5-6 minutes, thoroughly stirring snack mix every 2 minutes.  Remove bowl from microwave. Transfer snack mix to paper towels and allow to cool slightly.

To make the candied almonds: Combine the water, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla powder, and sweet caramel seasoning in a sauce pan over medium heat, whisking to dissolve dry ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil and add the almonds. Cook almonds in the sugar syrup, stirring the mixture until liquid evaporates and leaves a syrup-like coating on the almonds.

Pour the sugared almonds onto a baking sheet lined with waxed paper. Separate the almonds using a fork. Allow nuts to cool for about 15 minutes before adding 1 Tbsp of the vanilla powder and 1 Tbsp sugar. Toss the coated almonds in the vanilla sugar mixture.

Add the cooled candied almonds to your spicy chex snack mix.
