Named for the ancient Syrian city along the Silk Road, Aleppo chile is a milder variety of Capsicum annul [red pepper], used in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Also known as the Halaby pepper, the Aleppo has an earthy, warm flavor that is a cross between cumin and cayenne.

Only moderately hot, with a heat level of about 10,000 on the Scoville scale, Aleppo chile can be sprinkled on pizzas, salads, potatoes, deviled eggs. Use as a milder substitute for crushed red pepper, or a zippier substitute for paprika. This is one of our favorite chiles for adding flavor without a lot of heat.
