What's Trending? Breakfast!
Predicting trends is tricky business (I mean, who would have thought Bernie and his mittens would be the talk of the town this week?!?). Luckily, in the food space, trends stick around a bit longer than in pop culture, so it’s just a tad bit easier for us to highlight food trends while they’re still hot.
So, what’s currently trending with food? One hot topic is breakfast! The restaurant industry has even taken notice as we are beginning to see breakfast focused and breakfast only joints popping up (The Breakfast Club, Rori’s, and Early Bird are just a few new spots in the Des Moines metro).
When it comes to cooking, most of us are still spending more time in our homes – and our kitchens. And a bowl of cereal in the morning is no longer cutting it. Our Instagram feeds are dominated by mouthwatering photos of avocado toast, fancily-topped bagels, and some epic homemade breakfast sandwiches!
There are a handful of AllSpice ingredients we like to keep on hand to zhuzh up our breakfast:
Bacon Infused Olive Oil, because you can’t beat a delicious extra virgin olive oil infused with natural bacon flavors! We use this for egg frying, and as a drizzle on our fancy toasts (like avocado toast, toast topped with scrambled eggs, etc.). It’s also an excellent addition to an egg casserole.
Bell Farm Creamed Honey is locally sourced, and is marvelous on toast. Bonus? It’s spreadable!
Everything Bagel Seasoning is good on…well, everything! We like this on a bagel with cream cheese, but it’s also good on eggs, avocado toast, salmon and more.
Herbes de Provence is a great French blend of herbs including savory, fennel, basil, thyme, and lavender. Try adding it to your scrambled eggs or omelet.
Maple Sugar Powder is made from the sap of the sugar maple tree (after it passes through the maple syrup phase). The liquid is boiled off, leaving a tasty block of natural sugar, which is then ground into a powder. We like to use it as a sweet dusting for our oatmeal, granola, and yogurt.
Rory Brown Breakfast Sausage Blend is an easy way to add a sagey-sausage flavor with just a bit of a kick to any dish, even if you’re excluding the sausage.
What are you making for breakfast? If you’re needing a little inspiration, check out a few of our favorite breakfast dishes from the AllSpice recipe library:
Breakfast Sausage Bread – Yes, you read that correctly. Former AllSpicer Chad put the AllSpice touch on this tasty breakfast-inspired bread recipe. The result is a dense, dark bread which manages to be both savory and a bit sweet all at once.
Bacon, Leek, and Cheese Mini Muffins – We like to serve these savory muffins a bit warm (or even better, right out of the oven), with a big mug of coffee. This is a great option if you’re doing breakfast on the go.
Baked Berry Oatmeal – AllSpicer Rory had his first taste of baked oatmeal on a vacation in the Northeast, and he’s made it regularly since. Serve warm with steamed milk or vanilla yogurt.
BLT Breakfast Salad – This recipe combines a delicious BLT with soft-boiled eggs and fresh greens to create a tasty, Whole 30-friendly breakfast that’s easy to make.
Rory’s Cinnamon Rolls – A family favorite, Rory’s cinnamon rolls are an old-timey recipe (think 60’s community cookbook) topped with a wonderful maple frosting.
