Spotlight Spice: Avocado Oil
This week we’re shining the spotlight on our Avocado Oil. Avocado oil is one of few edible oils which doesn’t come from a nut or seed – it’s pressed from the pulp of the avocado surrounding the pit.
Once pressed, our avocado oil is refined which gives it smooth, green, and grassy notes with mild avocado flavor, perfect for carrying other flavors. This makes the oil a good option for combining with our flavor infused balsamic vinegars for tasty vinaigrettes and marinades.
Avocado oil also has an unusually high smoke point of nearly 500°F (for comparison, olive oil has around a 375°F smoke point and butter has a smoke point of around 225°F). This makes it perfect for high temperature cooking methods like sauteing, frying, broiling, baking, and grilling.
Try tossing veggies in it prior to roasting, marinating white fish, chicken, and pork, and using as a butter replacement on toast and in baking recipes.
You can even make a tasty mayo substitute with an egg, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a teaspoon of Pinot Grigio White Wine Vinegar, a teaspoon of lemon juice, a dash of Fine Sea Salt, and a cup of our avocado oil. Place all the ingredients in a bowl, then blend until it reaches roughly the consistency of mayonnaise (an immersion blender is your friend for this step). Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.
Pick up a bottle in the shop or online and give it a try.
