Staff Profile: Diane

This post is one of a series of profiles of the AllSpice staff. We’re proud of our talented and eclectic crew.

Over the summer, get to know our AllSpice “Spice Grrrls” and “Old Spice Guys.”

This week: Diane S.

Tell us about yourself. I was born in Chicago, but I’ve spent most of my life in Iowa. I graduated from multiple schools in Des Moines: East High School, DMACC (twice!) and Drake (also twice!). I spent my (first) professional career in healthcare and insurance.

How did you come to be part of the AllSpice crew? Friends worked at the store so I knew of history/background/planning before AllSpice even opened. But then, Marcia Steel, owner of Found Things and an acquaintance from my insurance days, mentioned that AllSpice was looking for someone to support the inventory process. And I thought, I think I can do that! …  and the rest is history.

What are your main responsibilities at the shop? I work primarily with inventory/production. I try to make sure we don’t run out of the products our customers need. However, I will help with anything as long as it is not too high or heavy!

What’s your favorite ingredient in the store? Vanilla paste and truffle salt. It’s a tie for which is my favorite — but not together in the same recipe. That would be weird.

What’s your favorite thing to cook – what is your specialty? I prefer to bake, and I like simple recipes without a “laundry list” of lots of ingredients. I like making my mom’s peanut butter cookies.

When someone else is doing the cooking, what’s your favorite dish?
Just about anything.

Do you have a food that is your guilty pleasure, and if so, what is it? Nachos or ice cream. Again, not at the same time. That would be extra weird.

Is there any food or ingredient you absolutely won’t [or can’t] eat? I have never eaten a raw oyster,  and I am not particularly fond of anchovies. And, of course, I need to mention spices that make your eyes water.

What do you do for fun, when you’re not having fun at AllSpice? This time of year I spend a good deal of time in my yard. I also take classes at the Art Center and would consider myself to be a “rookie” jeweler [editor’s note: see the cool earrings Diane is wearing in the photo, above].  My new favorite thing to do is meetup with friends over at the The Cheese Shop by Roosevelt.

What about you would people find surprising? Well I am not sure– maybe people would be surprised to know I was a high school cheerleader. Or maybe, that I am a great aunt–6 times over! Or that I have 2 of very best cats ever, Harlequin and Chevron.
