Back to school-time. For many people, our thoughts turn to fall with the start of the new school year (or even back in early August, with the flurry of “Back to School” promotions). However, even with children back in the classroom, it feels too soon to be thinking of fall.
Close the pool-time. It starts to feel like fall when August turns to September, and the long Labor Day weekend marks the closing of the public pool, and the retirement of seersucker, sandals, and white linen. But even then, it’s nice to hang on to the last lingering days of summer — we know they are fleeting.
It’s all Greek, er Latin, to me. For an exact, official and scientific definition of when fall begins, you have the autumnal (or Invernal) equinox. [Your Latin lesson for the day: the word equinox means “equal night“; that is, night and day are about the same length of time.]
The almanac declares that the autumnal equinox is “when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator from north to south. (The celestial equator is the circle in the celestial sphere halfway between the celestial poles. It can be thought of as the plane of Earth’s equator projected out onto the sphere.)” In 2015, that happens begins on September 23, early in the morning at 4:21 A.M.
Frost is on the punkin, and all that. Another definition of fall is nights of below-freezing temperatures combined with days of temperatures below 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The drop below freezing kills the annoying bugs (and relieves you of late-season garden chores, yay), and the cooler temperatures make it really *feel* like Fall. But even with the fodder in the shock and whatnot, those crisp, cold nights are too few and far between right now, and we’re ready to have it be fall, already.
Instant autumn, in a box. Fall is more than an arbitrary start date, an event on a calendar, or even a dip below freezing. Fall is more like a sense, a feeling.
