Last week, while we were working together at the store, the conversation turned (as it does in around Valentine’s Day) to talk of love, and feeling loved. Rory asked us, what foods make you feel especially loved? Here are some of the answers:
AllSpice staffer Eva says: I love this Applesauce Spice Cake from my mom’s vintage Better Homes + Gardens cookbook. [Editor’s note: we’ve adapted the recipe here]. The page it’s printed on was already crinkled and butter-stained when the book was handed down to her from one of her great aunts – that’s how you know it’s really good! My mother will make this a few times a year and I love to come over and have a piece (or two or three).
AllSpicer Anna says: Turtle bread makes me feel loved! I used to make this with my mom and siblings. It’s a really simple recipe, so we could make most of it on our own. It’s an activity we kids could do together that didn’t involve copious amounts of arguing.
Plus, it looks like a turtle when you’re done — and who doesn’t love food that’s shaped like other things?
AllSpice co-owner Andy says: I always love it when Rory makes Spaghetti with Beef Mushroom Sauce for us. This is a recipe we adapted from Real Simple that we both love!
Rory’s story: “Well I think I fall into the must-have-chocolate for Valentine’s Day group. I love to make (and eat!) decadent, beautiful chocolate desserts. They don’t have to be overly sweet, they just have to be ridiculously rich and creamy.
“Some favorite recipes that fall into this category are a couple of chocolate cheesecakes that I love to make for special occasions. They all pretty much stem from the same recipe, but I vary it by using Bailey’s Irish Cream or Kahlúa in it. It’s become the special dessert that other family members, like my nephew Bryant, ask for it when I cook for them.
“Now, when I think about food and Andy and my love for him, I really enjoy when we go out to have a very nice, elegant meal, just enjoying some wonderful food together. It is just so much fun to talk about the food and wine pairings and just get lost in the experience together.”
